Days 1 and 2 (6.14-15.15): A meeting with Gil Hoffman by Eliana Bortz

Gil Hoffman is the chief political correspondent and analyst for The Jerusalem Post. He is a journalist from Chicago, regular analyst on CNN and Al-Jazeera, and well connected to both Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Gil talked to us about the political situation in Israel. There are a hundred  and twenty members in the Knesset and the Israelis political system is very complicated. There are ten political parties that are members of the Knesset. Elections are supposed to occur every four years, however this is not always the case. The Knesset can dissolve at any time causing emergency elections. There are so many different political parties in Israel. This makes it so that every citizen will have someone that they want to vote for. This year is the most amount of women ever to be in the Knesset. Currently there is only one member in the Knesset who is gay. There are a lot of minorities in the Knesset including women, gays, and Arabs. In the most recent elections, Netanyahu received 61 votes which is a very slim margin to win by. Even though there are many diverse voices in the Knesset, there are three problems that they all the agree on: security, the need to change the way the political system runs, and the gap between the rich and the poor. The population break down of Israel is as follows: 8 million people total with 75% Jewish, 20% Arab and Muslim, and five percent other. The Knesset members are working very hard to make Israel the best it can be. These members fight for the people they represent attempting to modernize this ever changing state.
