Days 6 and 7 (6.16-17.2023) : The Shuk by Ben Blocker

A shuk epitomizes Israeli culture.  Imagine a supermarket, spread out with hundreds of vendors, lining multiple streets and covering an entire neighborhood.  Then imagine those streets filled with thousands of people, to the point that you can barely move.  In the shuk, it is common to bargain for goods, and also, to be shoved aside by an angered Israeli.  For me, the shuk was very enjoyable.  The hustle and bustle of people around us made me feel like a part of a larger community.  The shuk was also a very good time to practice some of the skills one of the Shinshinim taught me.  We had some delicious food at the shuk including, shawarma, schnitzel and other food.  I also ran into my grandparents who are living in Jerusalem.  I was very glad to see them and they didn’t embarrass me a bit (not being sarcastic).  At the shuk I also learned the art of bargaining.  After Jaden managed to go from two pairs of pants for 60 shekel to 40 shekel each, I had to step in.  I confidently used the little hebrew I have paired with my negotiation training from business class at school to get the price to 50 shekel for both (we still paid too much).  All in all the shuk was a great experience, but we saw more Americans than anywhere else on the trip, so it was definitely a tourist trap as well.
