Early on the morning of the 16th, we got up too early once again and headed down to the bottom floor for breakfast. After breakfast, we went outside to a small green area on the hotel property where we met Eliaz Cohen, a social activist and poet. Mr. Cohen opened his session with us by talking about everything he loved about the Dead Sea including its history and how it was reclaimed during the six day war. One interesting fact that he also told us which stood out to me is that the Dead Sea is at the lowest elevation in the world, at 430 meters below sea level. After Eliaz concluded his remarks about the Dead Sea, he tasked us to write poetry about what we know of it. Initially everyone seemed hesitant about this task; no one on our trip is known for being particularly talented at writing poetry. Even so, we all proceeded. When the group reconvened and shared our writings, they really weren’t all that bad. In fact, some of them were pretty good. Alex’s poem was especially a highlight as he wrote some of it in English and Spanish and even if he translated the Spanish to English, the lines still rhymed. I also felt pretty proud when one of the Shinshinim asked me if I had used ChatGBT. By the end of the activity, I think everyone enjoyed themself.
