Day 8 (6.18.2023): Graffiti at the Dead Sea by Arielle Epstein

On June 18th, 2023 we started our Dead Sea adventure day with a tour of graffiti in multiple spots around the Dead Sea area. Our tour was led by Dead Sea Guardian, Oded Rahav. It was cool getting to go to these abandoned spots and experience buildings that used to be on the Dead Sea but are now abandoned and in the middle of nowhere because the Dead Sea level is lowering even as we speak. One building, used to be a hotel. However, today it looked nothing like a hotel. It was partially demolished and covered in spray paint. This did make for cool pictures and we all got on the roof for a big group photo. One area, was particularly cool. There was these huge designs of graffiti which were all amazing, painted on the sides of abandoned buildings. The group “Artists 4 Israel” really did a good job putting them together. We sat in one of them and reflected on who is killing the Dead Sea. It’s a complicated question. One area we went to had an amazing design of the Jordan River, however it had been destroyed by other graffiti arts painting over it and covering almost the whole thing. I thought this activity was cool considering how sick all of the buildings looked and it was a good opener to the day, continuing our graffiti learning adventures. We even saw graffiti band aids which took us back to our graffiti tour in Tel Aviv where we learned about Dede, who graffitis band aids all over to leave his mark.
