Day 8 (6.18.2023): Beautiful Desolation: The Beautification of Abandonded Sites Near the Dead Sea by Ben Blocker

The ride down to the dead sea illuminated the fact that it is quickly disappearing.  As we wove through the sandy terrain, it occurred to me that since I had last been to the dead sea, it had dropped nearly 4 feet, a ridiculous amount.
With the sea dropping so quickly, many areas that used to be tourist spots, and prime waterfront properties have been abandoned.  We visited multiple old hotels that had been converted into graffiti art projects.  It was incredible to see that a group of people cared enough to develop the abandoned buildings into beautiful works of art.
As we approached the sea, I appreciated it more than the last time.  I understood that it’s disappearing, and could be completely gone in my lifetime.  Though it’s uncomfortable to grapple with the fact that such a beautiful sea could soon be gone, I found some comfort in the fact that there are people trying to maintain it, and also people cleaning up the dry land left behind.
