Tze Ulmad: An Open Beit Midrash (8th-12th Grades)
Tze Ulmad: An Open Beit Midrash is a vibrant learning community for students in grades 8–12, dedicated to exploring Jewish texts, ideas, and traditions in an open, welcoming, and intellectually engaging environment. A partnership between @Akiva and Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, the program is rooted in the timeless model of the Beit Midrash, where participants come together to ask meaningful questions, examine diverse perspectives, and discover how ancient wisdom speaks to contemporary life. The Teen Track meets every Wednesday from 7:00–8:30 p.m. throughout the school year, providing a welcoming space for meaningful learning, thoughtful discussion, and lasting friendships. Whether you are new to Jewish learning or have years of experience, Tze Ulmad offers a place where curiosity is encouraged, every voice is valued, and learning becomes a shared journey of growth, connection, and discovery.
The program is led by Rabbi Scott Roland of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah and Avigail Botnik, the Jewish Education Center (JEC) Educational Shlicha. Rabbi Roland brings deep expertise in Jewish learning and text study, while Avigail brings contemporary Israeli perspectives that connect Jewish tradition to life in Israel today. The Cleveland Shin Shinim will also participate throughout the year, enriching the Beit Midrash with their personal experiences and unique insights as young Israeli emissaries. In addition, participants will learn from guest teachers and community educators, who will bring a wide range of expertise and perspectives to enrich the learning experience. The program is free of charge, making it accessible to all students in grades 8–12 who are eager to learn, connect, and grow.
