Day 11 (6.22.2022): Graffiti Reflection By Maddie Mccann

As our trip comes to an end, for our last activity we did a graffiti tour of Tel Aviv with Graffitiyul! Tel Aviv is covered with graffiti, and we were able to see some amazing pieces. One of my favorite things we saw were a pair of blue eyes on the top of a building. Most people would walk right by not noticing the eyes, so the eyes are a reminder to look up, and be more aware of your surroundings. To me, the eyes are a reminder to live more in the moment, and to try and appreciate your surroundings, and not be completely focused on looking down at a phone in your hands. Another one of my favorite things we saw was a wall of colorful hearts next to an elementary school. Our graffiti tour guide explained how you’re never supposed to cover graffiti art with other graffiti, because that’s disrespectful. In the graffiti world respect is the most important thing, so covering other persons’s art is not a sign of respect, and ruins the peace between artists. A beautiful thing about graffiti art is that after a piece is put on the wall it is released into the world and the public, so artists have to learn how to let go and move on from it, unlike other art hanging in the museum. Some artists even choose to up-cycle their spray paint cans, so they’re not wasting the empty cans which is much better for the environment. Finally, we had the opportunity to create our own piece of graffiti. My group chose to draw a vine growing from Cleveland to Bet Shean to symbolize our new bond that grew with our Israeli friends. In conclusion, it was a great final activity to end an amazing trip.
