Day 9 (6.20.2022) A Higher Perspective By Maya Marderstein

Yesterday, we met up with Shai Shemesh at a beautiful viewpoint that looked over the northern border of Israel. Looking out, it was easy to differentiate Lebanon from Israeli grounds because of the drastic difference in their landscapes. The Israeli territory was covered in trees, while the Lebanon side was completely desert. We were at such a high elevation that we were able to see the border so clearly. It was cool to see a real life representation of a border while hearing about the issues of the territory lines. These issues date back to the First World War when all of the area was dominated by the Ottoman Empire. The British and French decided to split the Middle East between themselves. To this day, the line is still referred to as “the blue line.” Israel has a complicated relationship with its neighbors, especially Lebanon. One thing I learned today is that if a war was to break out, all chaos would arise. Lebanon and Hezbollah would fire straight against Israel. The problem with Israel and it’s bordering neighbors has been going on for a long time; there is no immediate solution to this conflict. Will there ever be a resolution with Israel and it’s Northern borders in the future? When will this long-awaited relief finally arise?
