Day 9 (6.20.2022): Different But The Same By Gabe Rubanenko

Peel back the layers and never think you know everything. That was the piece of advice that we were given by two non-Jews that we met with earlier today. Both Daniel and Henry gave us the irreplaceable opportunity to learn and understand what it’s like to live in Israel as a non-Jew. Henry, who is a 27 year old Christian from Nazareth, told us his story of growing up with different viewpoints than some of his friends and community. Earlier this year, we were asked to watch the short film How Amir Got His Gun. This is a story of an Arab Israeli who chooses to join the Israeli army and support his country in a way that differs from others in his community. This brave action by Amir caused him to lose friends in the process, but it didn’t change his moral strength and will to help his country. This is exactly what Henry spoke to us about. He knew that if he wanted to make a difference, he would need to make sacrifices. When asked if he regretted his decision, his response was “absolutely not”, showing us that it is important to block out those who doubt and not have any regrets in life. His message and hope ofor the future is to unite the Christian community and Israel as a whole. This message resonated with all of us and helped us understand that their are different perspectives from every religion. The beauty of our trip has shown us much more than just what Israel looks like but has also provided us a lesson that we will never forget. It is important to remember that even though we have different cultures and beliefs, we are all people and we are one big community.
