Day 8 (6.19.2022): Protection Of The Dead Sea By Orli Peleg

This morning we headed south from Jerusalem. We spent the morning in Kibbutz Kalya, and in the afternoon headed to the Dead Sea.

While at the Kibbutz, we had the opportunity to meet Oded Rahav, an activist who is working to save the Dead Sea. Oded is very passionate about his cause, and is working on spreading awareness to others. We were all given t-shirts saying that we are Dead Sea Guardians, and encouraged to help spread the awareness.

For those who don’t know, the Dead Sea is receding at a rapid rate, correctly calculated at .5 cm each day. To put that into perspective, that means that between Monday and Friday, the Dead Sea recedes  a full inch!

When we went for a short walk on a rocky path near the beach, Oded pointed out where the water level used to be, and where now there is a full two lane road plus more area on the side of the road.

The potential of losing an experience currently is happening in the Cleveland area. There is a shortage of lifeguards which is causing pools to not be able to open. Without those lifeguards young kids are losing the experiences that we had as young kids of being able to go to the pool in the summer with their friends. As Oded needs to grow the base of the foundation in order to preserve the experience, the Cleveland area is in need of certified lifeguards in order to preserve the experience of summer pool parties for all kids.
