Day 4 (6.15.2022): Jaffa Through the Eyes of Assaf Boker by Maya Marderstein

Assaf Boker can be described as a lifelong traveler and discover. During our icnext Seminars we had been meeting with Assaf on zoom, and I can really say I’ve learned lots about Israel’s history through a wide range of time periods. Today Assaf took our group on a short journey through Israel’s most historic city, Jaffa. We began the tour by standing on the banks of the Mediterranean Sea and learning about the biblical stories that make it such a symbolic place. The story of Jonah and the Whale is an example. Jonah tried to run from his responsibilities, but God stuck with him and gave him a second chance. We then took a visit to “old Jaffa.” Many believe Jaffa to be the center of Christianity due to the loads of historical ties within the history of the Christian faith. Next along the path was St. Peter’s church; an Italian church. The exterior was beautiful and modern, unlike the other rustic buildings in Jaffa. This was constructed to represent the unique place Italian Christians hold in Jaffa. Lastly, Assaf ended the tour with the most breathtaking view in Jaffa. The walking tour inspired me to reflect on the deep historical beauty of Israel’s cities. Assaf helped me realize the true importance of Jaffa, a city that holds so much historical significance for many faiths.
