From Elijah Kriwinsky:
The Gate: A One Man Show
The Gate: A One Man Show
I have gone to a lot of different places in my life, but never have I been to a huge cow farm in the middle of nowhere, protected by a small yellow gate. I did not really think much of this until I realized that it was the gate that would be the center point for one of my first - yet I believe best - one man shows I have ever seen.
The show was performed in a building on this cow farm, inside luckily because it smelt like ten thousand cows all decided to not take showers for a thousand years. This small kibbutz would be the setting for this show.
First we were introduced to the performer, Robbie Gringas. he would be playing three characters but before I introduce them I believe it is important to give some brief history: Israel went through a lot of wars one of which is the war of independence in 1948 which accomplished a huge cultural change from a majority Arab nation to a majority Jewish nation. After the six day war Israel had control of most of the land well in Israel Arab Palestinians in most areas were granted rights but not all.
This information is important to know as now you will understand the need for a gate in between these two peoples. With so much violence in the creation of Israel there is of course going to come conflicting ideals. This is where the characters Udi, Yiftach, and Amal come in they all see this gate and begin to argue Amal is banned from entering because of her being tied to some criminal activity in her past and because of her ethnicity the person who banned her is named Udi and he is the gatekeeper and racist because of how his brother died in the war of independence. Yiftach wants the gate open because he says that there his neighbors and deserve to be involved. Needless to say both views and radical opposites.
So we are all told this and then the strangest things begin to happen and you see Robbie speaking in a high voice then a low voice and the story that he tells comes to life.
I feel as if to really appreciate this story though you have to hear it from the man himself, but the story basically can be crudely summarized as two old men fighting over a gate with the bystander Amal just doing her thing until one night the two men get into an intense fight results in a shot fired this shot awakens them to a new reality that the gate may be best simply stuck in the middle.
