Day 10 (6.10.2023): Koby Sibonys Wire Art Workshop by Ezrin Saltzman

It was about 90 degrees at 9am this morning and the humidity was killing me. I was exhausted struggling to even get myself to move when we walked into a magical air conditioned slice of heaven; Koby Sibonys wire art workshop.
Koby has been working with wires since he was in the third grade. According to him he likes the unconventional style of art because he doesn’t have to follow anyone else's rules or styles when he works, he gets to be free. He portrayed this in his workshop because he simply told us how to bend the wire but there was one rule. We weren’t allowed to look online or at our phones at all for inspiration, everything we make has to come from ourselves and ourselves only. In all honesty this was a bit difficult at first. My generation lives in an age where we do things to earn an A, a medal, or likes on social media so many of us struggle to find our own identities when we are constantly held to expectations and deadlines. However in this workshop there was none of that. We had time to sit alone with only our thoughts and imaginations and in the end we were able to create something. Koby told us at the end that what we made isn’t always going to be what we imagined it to be but that this was all a part of learning that the wire has a life of its own. And when I think about it, this relates to life because when you let go of expectations and go with the flow of life, you may find yourself in an air conditioned workshop instead of another long lecture in unbearable heat.
